Choosing the best golf course
May 2024
To make your golf tournament successful, choose the golf course carefully by getting at least three proposals and select the course that best fits your event needs.
Start your search early and negotiate your deal as soon as possible with lead time of six months or more. Price will be dictated by the time of year or day of the week and your best value will be Monday through Thursday and/or the shoulder season which is between the peak season and the off season.
Planning Your Event
Fore Aces Golf Management professionals are experts when it comes to the planning of golf tournaments. Some, but not all, of the areas we can help:
Define the purpose – When planning a successful golf tournament the very first step is to define your purpose. What is the objective? What are you trying to accomplish? This sounds elementary, but it is important that everyone on the team knows the direction and is headed the same way. If the committee is not on the same page, you could have a fund raising event, with one committee member getting donations and another buying expensive prizes, thus, defeating the purpose.
Staffing the event – The Phoenix Open is the biggest PGA golf tournament in the country and it did not happen by accident. The Phoenix Open is owned and operated by the Phoenix Thunderbirds, The Thunderbirds are a local group of volunteer businessmen who decided 65 years ago to pull together a few friends, Pro’s and Celebrities, and play golf. Today this 4-day tournament attracts over 500,000 people and is considered, by local patrons, the social event of the year.
“People can be divided into three groups, those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.” – John Newberg
Choosing a format – Having too many players can be a real blessing if you choose the right format for the size of the group, but a disaster if you choose the wrong one. The tournament format you choose can make the difference between a good event and a great event. There are many ways to format an event. Each format is designed for a different purpose. When choosing a format it is important to know the purpose of your event and know the caliber of your golfers. This helps ensure golfers will return year after year. Consider these questions when choosing a format:
Choosing a golf course – Choosing a golf course is one of the most important ingredients in a successful event. Your golfers will always comment on the course, good or bad. It is part of the tournament they will remember. If you have a bad course, it will be hard to get them back next year.
